HOLDING the 15th general election (GE15) soon is not a priority because the current government is stable, said PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

He also said Putrajaya is responsible for reviving the economy even during the Covid-19 endemic phase.

“GE15 is not a priority because we have a stable government that has the support of political parties, including the opposition. There is a memorandum of understanding and so on,” he told a media conference in Putrajaya today.

“There is no pressing reason for the national polls to be held soon. It is not an issue of being afraid to lose; there will definitely be a fight.”

He was responding to claims that his party is worried about losing if GE15 is not held soon.

Takiyuddin said the national polls will be called based on the Federal Constitution, after the collective agreement of the cabinet and on the advice of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve parliament.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said GE15 should not be held now, not when the country is still grappling with the rising cost of living and high inflation rate.

The national polls must be called by mid-September 2023, which is 60 days after the automatic dissolution of the current parliament on July 16, 2023. – Bernama, June 14, 2022.
